The Celebration of the Prophet’s Birthday as an Inspiration for Leadership

(INDONESIAN VERSION) The celebration of the Prophet’s birthday, known as Maulid Nabi, holds great significance in Islam as it commemorates the birth of Prophet Muhammad Shallallahu Alaihi Wasallam. This celebration is not merely a ceremonial moment but also carries profound meaning that serves as a source of inspiration for leaders across various societal strata, including the field of education. In this podcast, we hear the perspective of a distinguished leader, Professor Doctor Haji Wawan Wahyudin M.Pd, the Rector of UIN Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin Banten, on how Maulid Nabi can be a source of inspiration in leadership.

Maulid Nabi as a Commemoration

Maulid Nabi is not just a celebration or a ceremony. It is a commemoration that should enhance our understanding of ideal leadership. When we celebrate the birth of the Prophet, we should also contemplate the teachings and examples he left for humanity. One lesson we can draw from Maulid Nabi is how strong leadership can face various challenges and trials.

Strong Leadership in Facing Challenges

For instance, when Prophet Muhammad was born, Abrahah’s forces attempted to destroy the Kaaba, but with Allah’s permission, flocks of birds (ababil) came to save the Kaaba. This teaches us that in leadership, we must be prepared to face various challenges and trials. Strong leadership is not solely determined by power or wealth but also by wisdom, resilience, and steadfastness in addressing issues.

Additionally, the Prophet faced various challenges during his mission. Despite facing ridicule and opposition from various quarters, he chose not to respond with violence or revenge. The Prophet taught the importance of tolerance, patience, and peace in leadership. These are valuable lessons applicable to the modern world, often filled with conflicts and tensions.

Leadership Based on Ethics and Cleanliness

The Prophet was also known for his akhlakul karimah, or noble character. As a leader, he set an extraordinary example in this regard. A good leader must possess good character and inspire others to follow such an example. Cleanliness is also one of the characteristics of the Prophet’s leadership. He always maintained personal hygiene and the cleanliness of his surroundings, setting an example that leaders should care for their environment.

Inclusive Leadership

The Prophet also taught inclusive leadership. He did not lead just one group but conveyed the message of rahmatan lil ‘alamin, meaning a mercy to all of creation. In the modern context, this reminds us that a leader should not favor only one group or faction but should advocate for the interests and welfare of the entire community.

Leadership Involving Education

Moreover, Maulid Nabi emphasizes the importance of education. The Prophet consistently encouraged his followers to learn and acquire knowledge. As a leader, he also exemplified that good leadership should be based on deep knowledge and understanding.

Message for Future Generations of Leaders

In conclusion, Professor Wawan encourages the future generation of leaders to utilize the Maulid Nabi moment as an educational platform, maintain harmony during electoral processes, and uphold cleanliness and environmental concerns. Ideal leadership should be grounded in noble character, tolerance, and wisdom. All these teachings can serve as inspiration for future leaders to lead effectively and benefit society.
